Fullerenes

Price of C60 and C70 for online ordering

Fullurenes are a form of carbon that are spheroidal molecules consisting of a hollow cage of sixty or more atoms. They are produced by the action of an arc discharge between carbon electrodes in an inert atmosphere.

Uses : Fullerenes are used to trap free radicals generated during an allergic reaction and block the inflammation that results from an allergic reaction. Combining fullerenes with nanotubes and polymers improved the functionality of solar cells by painting the engineered polymer on the surface.

Future Uses : Research is being undertaken to understand if fullerenes can be used to store hydrogen, possibly as a fuel supply for fuel cell powered cars. They may be able to reduce the growth of bacteria in water systems. Researchers are attempting to modify Carbon C60 to fit the section of the HIV molecule that binds to proteins, possibly inhibiting the spread of the virus. Making bullet proof vests with tungsten disulfide fullerenes is also a possibility.
